Wed-Cap: Mother/Son Dance

The only other "special" dance we had in addition to our first dance was the mother/son dance. Since my father was not at the wedding we obviously didn't include the father/daughter dance. I did briefly consider doing a brother/sister dance but decided that both my brother and I would have felt weird doing that, however I didn't want to take away the opportunity for Kristian and his mom to have a special dance together which I knew my mother in law would be looking forward to.

So after we ate, we did the mother/son dance as a way to open up the dance floor for post dinner dancing. I told Kristian he and his mother needed to decide on the song, I had no say in what it was. He chose Rod Stewart's "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" since his mother is a big Rod Stewart fan.

Both Kristian and his mom felt awkward dancing by themselves on the floor for the entire song so halfway through his father came up to me and suggested we cut in and have a couples dance for the second half of the song. This turned out to be a great idea, it was really nice being on the floor dancing with his parents who have been married for over 40 years and who we really look up to as a couple.

*I think this is such a cute picture of Kristian and his dad high-fiving*

*We always say we are the younger version of his parents, the way we interact as a couple is very similar to them so hopefully this means we're in for over 40 years of marriage ourselves*

*Kristian got his dance moves (and love of dipping) from his dad*

Did/Will you have special dances with your parents? What songs did you dance too?

We did mother/son and father/daughter. I let my dad pick. I wanted my dad to be involved so he didn't feel like he was just writing checks all the time. We had the dads do the 2 readings at the church. My dad picked a Phil Collins song. I think from Tarzan? From some Disney movie. We tease him for liking Phil Collins (and Disney for that matter). You'll be in My Heart.

Rob and his mom danced to Celine Dion's song. Darned if I remember the title. One of the few that don't make me hurl though. The one from that Michelle Pfeiffer/Robert Redford movie. Because You Loved Me? Is that one of hers? Something like that, I think.

It was fun. As I mentioned, my dad did ballroom dancing so he gave me pointers. I still stepped on his toes. Then, I was made because he counted off for me when we practiced and then didn't that night. So, I made him count and then I missed my cue to twirl and we had to do it again. Fun times though. Sometimes, I feel like my mom takes all the time and space when we all get together so it was nice to have a moment with my dad (because both my parents walked me down the aisle, he didn't get that moment).

Love the pics! Especially the one of his dad high fiving him :) So cute.

My fiance is planning to do a mother/son dance too. I think having others join in at the end is a great idea. It can get kinda awkward :)

Great song choice, and I love the fact that your FIL danced with you during the song, as well. It looks like you all had fun!

I love this! My father in law also insisted that we cut in on my husband and his mom dancing. I think it was less about the awkwardness and more that he didn't want to be left out! It was cute and I loved being out there with them!

So cute! I love how you and K's dad cut in and danced as couples.

I've always dreamed of dancing with my dad at my wedding, and I intend to, if he'll agree to it! Our song will be "Moon River" (haven't figured out which version I want yet) since he used to sing that to me when I was little, before bedtime.

I would like to have a Mother/Son dance too, but neither my boyfriend or his mother are big into dancing or attention, so I guess that will be up to them.
