Milestone- Solids

This past Sunday, after most of the nasty funk from the day before had disappeared, we tried a little spoon feeding for the first time. After getting the all clear from Hunter's doctor at his 4 month appointment to start him on cereal and/or fruits we tried out a little baby oatmeal mixed with formula.

Hunter has been eyeballing our food and reaching for our plates for a few weeks now and after watching him suck down the oral vaccine, which had a sweet taste to it, we knew he was probably getting a little bored with his diet of solely breastmilk/formula. We mixed only 1 tablespoon of oatmeal with about 1oz of formula so it was very runny and easy to swallow.

It actually went better than I expected. He opened his mouth for the spoon but sat there a bit confused after I dumped a bit on his tongue. As expected he pushed most of it out with his tongue but he did swallow a little bit. Right now any solids he has his more for practice than for nutrition since he'll get so little into his belly. But he showed a definite interest.

We tried again on Monday and Wednesday night with about the same results. I think he's slowly starting to get the hang of it and I've been making the oatmeal slightly thicker and more of an actual oatmeal type consistency.

We bought some avocados and once they ripen up will mash those up and see what he thinks.

"Uh dad? Help?"
Please pardon my super sexy ensemble and messy house, I was still fighting off the stomach bug from hell.
My mom was there to witness the momentous occasion.

And here we go....

Nom Nom Nom (and yes that's what I was saying as I fed my child)

"Wait this isn't a nipple"

"Yeah Ma I got this"

For all you mamas out there, any tips or tricks that you have for feeding your kid solids?

I have no tricks, I just started feeing Hayes solids last week, and he is already a pro, and he eats sooo much. The first bite in his mouth he seemed to chew and swallow.

My best tip is to go with your mom instincts. We tried solids with Jamie and he was obviously not ready. Pushed pretty much everything out, gagged on what little made it in. So we backed off until 6 months and he did much better!

If it seems like he likes it, then go with it!

Look at what a big boy he is! Annabelle has yet to sit up right like that so we are holding off on solids for now. Hunter is hitting all his milestones so well! I can't wait to see pics from when he tries the avocados! :)
