Mommies don't get sick days

This past weekend was one of the hardest we've had since becoming parents. Around 2am Friday night I woke up feeling incredibly nauseous. After fighting the urge for close to an hour I finally puked, twice. I never puke. Even during the awful 6 weeks of pregnancy when I was nauseous every second of the day. I refuse to throw up. I hate it.

Kristian came in, rubbed my back and got me some water. I even laid on the bathroom floor for a while trying to sleep (our dog Moxie came in and laid next to me, how sweet is that). After very little sleep, I got up around 7am when I heard Hunter crying, went in and changed his diaper and as I was bringing him into our room I practically threw him at Kristian so I could run and throw up again. Misery.

Kristian went to the store to get the basics- gingerale, saltines, pepto, jello, chicken soup etc. while I laid on the couch and moaned. Around 10am he had to make a run for the bathroom and Pukefest 2012 was fully underway (It was times like this I was very thankful to have multiple bathrooms in the house). Fortunately I didn't throw up again but had a very bad stomache, nauseous and my whole body just ached. Poor Kristian had it much worse than I did. He was throwing up every 45 minutes or so from about 10am-5pm. We thought at first it was food poisoning but we both also had fevers along with the yucky stomachs.

As you can imagine, feeling like this pretty much sucks, feeling like this while having to care for an infant basically makes you want to shoot yourself. Of course his parents were two hours away at their beach house and my mother had to go to my niece's 1st Communion so we didn't really have anyone to come over and help watch Hunter.

THANK GOD Hunter was an angel baby on Saturday. He wasn't fussy at all, he took a 3 hour nap in his swing, woke up and ate then played nicely on his playmat before taking another hour long nap. I suspect his body was fighting off whatever we had which is why he slept so much because he never sleeps like that on the weekends. Because of this we were able to rest and be in misery without having to worry too much about him.

My mother came over later that night and spent the night so that she could get up with Hunter while Kristian and I slept. She is an angel and having her there to watch him really helped. On Sunday we were both feeling much better but I developed a weird rash and after taking some Benedryl crashed for about 3 hours. Again, Hunter was a great baby while Kristian watched him and didn't fuss at all.

I really don't know how we would have managed if he had been having one of his super fussy days or God forbid had also been sick. I think the fact that he's still on breastmilk helped keep him from catching whatever we had (at least for now). Having both parents sick at the same time while trying to care for a child really is one of the hardest things in the world but we survived and hopefully we won't have to do that again anytime soon!

Sidenote- the one advantage to having a nasty stomache bug is the weight loss. I lost 2 1/2 pounds and Kristian lost 7!

Man, I am SO sorry! I never even thought about this before as yet another challenge parents face. I'm glad your mom was able to come spend the night and that Hunter was on his best behavior.

Ugh. A very similar thing happened to us when Jamie was Hunters age. It was horrible. I hope everyone feels better soon!

How horrible! I also hate puking, like I have a very real fear of it. Glad you are both feeling better and made it though.

Breastmilk definitely helps... as does having a wonderful mother nearby! I hope you are feeling better. I'm nervous about the first time i get sick... like you experienced, i can only hope Annabelle will be a sweet baby on that day b/c i couldn't imagine being ill and taking care of a fussy baby!
