12 Weeks

Pregnancy Highlights

How Far Along: 12 weeks!

Size of baby: According to babycenter.com the baby is about the size of a lime

The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Your baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won't be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.

Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in your baby's brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, your baby-to-be is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce

Total Weight Gain/Loss: No weight gain yet, I keep going up and down the same 3 pounds depending on the day/time of day I weigh myself.
Maternity Clothes: no maternity clothes yet but I definitely need to wear a belly band to make my pants more comfortable and some shirts have gotten tight so I'm wearing more loose fitting and empire waist type tops and dresses.

Gender: too early to know yet. I started out convinced it was a boy but now we're both thinking girl. Guess it has to be one or the other right?

Movement: Just gas.

What I miss: eating meat (I have a total aversion to meat right now), being able to sleep through the night without having to get up at least twice to pee and my energy (not that I had that much before).

Sleep: for weeks 6-11 I did NOT sleep well at all but thankfully I seem to be sleeping much better now (minus all the trips to the bathroom).

Symptoms: Thankfully the nausea seems to be dying down though still not gone completely. Skin keeps breaking out and nothing seems to fix it and I've started getting more headaches lately.

Cravings: my appetite seems to finally be coming back a bit. Right now I love FRUIT! Also, smoothies, french fries, carbs (breads/pastas) and ice cream.

Best Moment this week: Getting my fetal doppler and listening to the baby's heartbeat everynight. Best sound I've ever heard!

What I am looking forward to: My doctor's appointment next week, won't have an ultrasound but they'll do an exam and listen to the heartbeat again, hopefully all will look good. Also, finally getting out of the first trimester, it has seemed never-ending.

**I promise to post some belly pictures next week of weeks 7-12, you can finally start seeing some changes**

Ha. You think the first trimester was long? Wait until the third. The third trimester is so long that you don't care about labor because you just want it out.

Oh, the glorious second trimester though. Cute clothes. People carrying things for you and holding doors. The nice hair and nails that come along with the hormones. You add a hint of the nesting period and it's bliss. Plus, Rob thought all the chemicals in cleaning solvents were bad so I didn't have to clean anything (until the end when he bought special cleansers that were all natural but by then, I had trouble bending and reaching).

About 8 more weeks then until we get to find out gender, yes? I thought boy until the last minute. Yes, it is usually one or the other.

I remember feeling like the 1st Tri lasted forever too! Which is funny, because I was 6 weeks when I found out so it was technically half over already! Time really stood still when I hit 35-36 weeks.

Love reading these! Makes me get a little itch for baby #2!
