I'm Yours

One of the items we've had the hardest time deciding on was our first dance song. I had no idea that Kristian would have such a strong opinion about what song we used during our first dance as a married couple. I feel like most guys don't care so much about that. We started talking about it a few months ago and I threw out a few song choices that I liked just to be promptly shot down. He also made a few selections that I wasn't a big fan of. It doesn't help that for the most part he and I have very different taste in music. He's all about Classic Rock and I prefer to listen to music from this century.

One of his requests was that the song have some kind of meaning to us and our relationship. Well once he said that it seemed like a pretty obvious choice.

Let me back up a bit....when he and I first started dating I was obsessed with the song 'I'm Yours' by Jason Mraz which had recently come out. He too really liked Jason Mraz and even had his CD which he burned a copy of for me. For his birthday in 2008 I found out that Jason Mraz was playing in concert the week of Kristian's birthday (great timing right?) so I bought us tickets as his birthday present. Then on the night he proposed 'I'm Yours' was the song playing when he asked me to marry him. In fact it was the lyrics in that song that convinced him to go ahead and propose that night which he hadn't originally planned on.

So as you can see it seemed the obvious choice for our first dance was 'I'm Yours'. Well we both veered away from that choice at first simply because the song is SOOO played out now and I didn't want something our guests would groan or roll their eyes out from hearing for the millionth time.

Then the lightbulb went off in my head and I remembered how at my friend Spanky's wedding she actually walked down the aisle to a really pretty acoustic version of the same song. So I found it on ITunes and we decided THAT was our song.

This way we get the sentimentality of using a song that is meaningful to us but we're able to use a version that not many people have heard and that I think is just beautiful. I can't wait! Check out our song choice below....

What a nice story dear! I'm sure you two are going to have a ball dancing this song! It's so peaceful, lovely and charming :)

I'd love to see this moment! :D

I don't care how much the song is overplayed, I love that song. Nice choice. Are you going to take dancing lessons or do something special or just dance slow and chat?

My parents used to ballroom dance so my dad actually taught me to dance for our father/daughter dance. I SUCKED. I stepped on his foot and told him that he had to count out every beat for me.

Rob picked our wedding song. So, I picked the final song. I'm not still bitter or anything.

LOVE that song, but the hubs hates jason mraz so he vetoed it!

if you're looking for cool instrumnetal versions of songs, vitamin string quarter does covers of all sorts of songs...all our pre-ceremony music was by them...and then the hubs and the boys used their string version of "don't stop believing" as their processional song...i walked to the string version of "i'll be".

I love when songs have meaning...especially when, like you said, it's a song that's kind of been overdone. Wish I wasn't at work and could hear the acoustic version, I bet it's amazing!

I had friends that got married in 2008 and her sister and her sister's boyfriend sang that song during the sand ceremony. It was SO SWEET.

I love that song! Lucky for us, we've always had a "song," which is Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop, so it was a no-brainer. Happy Friday!

Good choice! ;) I think the acoustic, first version of that song is still my favorite. It sounds much different from the played out radio version.

Even though Dave and I had our first dance to "I'll Cover You - Reprise" from RENT, we walked down the aisle to "I'm Yours", and our friends played it live. If you find me on Facebook, there is video of it. It was amazing. And we kind of consider it our song instead of the RENT song since it was so much more personal having our friends play it for us.

Oh, it's amazing! I love that idea. I had the songs picked out for our first dance when we had originally planned on doing a choreographed swing dance. However, after becoming totally overwhelmed 4 months ago with life and work, we opted out of the choreographed thing. But we didn't have a 'song'. So Mr Fix It told me that there was a song he had planned on playing at some point during the wedding for me as a surprise. It's not a totally slow song, but he said it perfectly fits how he feels about me and it is really important to him that I listen to all of the words :) So he played it for our DJ and we decided he would surprise me with it as our first dance. I pray I am not bawling through it but I am excited about not knowing what we'll have for our first dance.

I think your choice is perfect!

Aw, what a cute song choice! I think it's perfect. I wish picking my first dance song will be so easy... we don't have "a song." And, I think like Kristian, my boyfriend will be more vocal than I plan in the matter.
